Product Description

Melatonin, the primary hormone of the pineal gland, acts as a powerful chronobiotic, helping to maintain normal circadian rhythms. Synthesis of melatonin from the amino acid tryptophan is usually decreased during the aging process. In pets having difficulty sleeping or with altered circadian rhythms, such as occurs in elderly pets, supplementation with melatonin can help provide the resynchronization of those cycles, at amounts ranging from 0.3-5.0 mg.

Melatonin is also a potent antioxidant. Adequate melatonin lev- els have been reported to be a positive factor for cardiovascular, neuroendocrine, and bone health. In addition, melatonin has been documented in veterinary studies as achieving positive results in alopecia X and Cushing's syndrome.
Melatonin administration exerts a sedative-like effect in amounts of 0.3-5.0 mg. When taken before onset of a pet's own melatonin secretion, even low amounts of melatonin can promote sleep. Melatonin is thought to potentiate the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) via direct interaction with GABA receptors, thus resulting in relaxation. Research indicates melatonin exerts a sleep-promoting action by decreasing the time needed to fall asleep, improving the ability to stay asleep, and enhancing the depth of sleep.

Thorne Vet's MelatonVET supplies 3 mg of melatonin in each capsule. This potency is ideal for those pets requiring a moderate amount of melatonin.
