About Corydalis 5

Corydalis 5 is an herbal formula that contains a strong dose of the herb Corydalis, which is also referred to as Yan Hu Suo. It is widely used to treat pain and combines licorice and peony, which are found to be highly effective when used to combat pain and spasms. Also, the combination of Bulrush and Pteropus gives the formula added health benefits, especially when used to fight injury-related pain, as well as abdominal pain. All these combined can cover a wide range of pain types, from traumatic injury to menstrual cramps.

How Corydalis 5 Works

The product is a prescription that delivers a substantial dose of pain-relieving corydalis herb that is largely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In the older formulas that were prescribed in China, the formula included extra compounds that are now mainly addictive, such as opium poppy (papaver) and scorpion. For that reason, these ingredients were replaced with their next best alternative options. For instance, corydalis took the place of opium poppy, for it being a close relative without the addictive side-effects. In fact, corydalis is an herb with analgesic properties and contains alkaloids that are non-addictive.

Also, in the basic formula for treating spastic pain, the traditional licorice and peony combination comprised of those two herbs in equal amounts. However, Corydalis 5 also includes equal amounts of bulrush (aka Typha) and Pteropus herbs, which are used for menstrual pain, abdominal pain, and pain related to injuries. The same ingredients are also found in Lower Palace Tablets for cold stagnation-related abdominal pain. The resulting product can be effective when treating a broad spectrum of pain disorders. Although not as powerful as morphine is when treating extreme pain, it can certainly replace medications taken for milder pain, and provide blood vitalizing, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory effects. All that can also help resolve the underlying reason that is causing pain. Nevertheless, for peripheral pain, you may consider Qi Ye Pian, Chiang-huo 13, or Angelica 14.

Corydalis Ingredients

The formula contains the following compounds:

Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis) – An herb used for mild mental disorders, mild depression, limb tremors, severe nerve damage, and emotional disturbances, as well as to lower blood pressure, as a hallucinogen, tranquilizer, and mild sedative. It is also effective when the reduction of spasms in the small intestine is required.

Bai Shao (White peony) – A potent tonic for blood (also nourishes blood) and a heat-reducing herb for the liver. It also neutralizes a stagnant or hyperactive liver Qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The root of the herb helps with a plethora of symptoms, including irregulate periods in women, muscle spasms, abdominal pain. Chinese medicine practitioners use Bai Shao for its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antibacterial properties, along with its effectiveness on sweating. Studies have also found that the glycoside it contains can better autoimmune diseases.

Gan Cao (licorice) – An herb that is believed to soothe the stomach and gastrointestinal problems in general. These include heartburn, gastritis, stomach ulcers, and food poisoning, where it speeds the repair mechanisms of the stomach lining while its immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory qualities help bring balance back. Research has shown that a compound in Gan Cao can prevent a toxic bacterium (H.pylori) from growing in the gut. It also cleanses the respiratory system, helps reduce stress, protects the teeth and skin, and could also potentially aid the treatment of prostate and breast cancers.

Pu Huang (Bulrush pollen) – It is believed to lower blood pressure, increase the body’s tolerance to anoxia, boost microcirculation, improve coronary blood flow, reduce cardiac load, lower the levels of lipids (i.e., triglyceride), alter the compositions of lipids, enhance the motility of isolated intestine, and reduce the frequency of myocardial ischemic lesions. It has potent anti-asthmatic, analgesic, diuretic, choleretic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Wu Ling Zhi (Pteropus) – Largely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to invigorate the blood, alleviate pain (i.e., chest, epigastric, postpartum, abdominal, and menses pain), stop bleeding, and eliminate toxins. It also helps dispel blood stasis and can be found effective when used for childhood nutritional impairment.
