The primary mechanism common to all of the conditions for which this formula is indicated is the severe accumulation of water in the Bladder and the inability of the qi to transform fluids, manifested as urinary difficulty or edema. The basic strategy is to restore to the qi its function of regulating fluid metabolism. This formula may therefore be used in treating other problems than those described above. Because it enhances the transformation and transportation of fluids, it can be utilized when the Small Intestine fails in its task of separating the clear from the turbid. It is also useful in treating damp painful obstruction, which is characterized by a sensation of heaviness in the extremities and urinary difficulty. And where an accumulation of fluids known as pathogenic water (shui xie) invades the Lungs and causes coughing and wheezing, the use of this formula will promote urination and thereby eliminate the water and relieve the coughing and wheezing. --Bensky: Chinese Herbal Medicine Formulas and Strategies.*
