About Vitamin K2 with D3

Vitamin K2 with D3 is an Ortho Molecular Products formula specifically designed to help maintain a healthy cardiometabolic function while also promoting bone health. It can also be used to enable individuals with already normal levels of blood sugar to remain within a healthy range. In addition, Vitamin K2 with D3 uses the most studied form of vitamin K2 as MK7 (aka MenaQ7® PRO). Each capsule of Vitamin K2 with D3 contains 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 and 45 mcg of MenaQ7® PRO for optimal use and absorption by the body.

How Vitamin K2 with D3 Works

According to the most recent research, there seems to be a direct correlation between vitamins D3 and K2. Their synergistic relationship can contribute to both cardiovascular and bone health. As of now, vitamin D was considered to be the body’s best assistant in calcium absorption. However, clinical studies have evidenced that vitamin K guides calcium to the bones for proper calcium utilization as it helps bind calcium that has been newly absorbed to the bone mineral matrix by activating osteocalcin protein.

Also, it has been found that vitamin K can reduce the activity of specific cells responsible for breaking down the bone matrix (aka osteoclasts) to help maintain bone mineral density. Finally, Vitamin K offers essential cardiovascular protection by enabling the activation of a circulatory calcification inhibitor called MGP (matrix Gla protein). Therefore, it becomes apparent that both vitamin D and vitamin K act synergistically in the body and share similar attributes.

Vitamin K1 vs. Vitamin K2

There are two forms of vitamin K (1) K1 or phylloquinone, which comes from leafy greens and other foods, and (2) K2 or menaquinone that refers to a group of similar compounds that are categorized based on their side chains.

When it comes to the most bioavailable form of vitamin K, studies have shown that vitamin K2 as MK-7 is on top of the list. In fact, it has a much more significant contribution to bone building than its K1 counterpart. Plus, most of vitamin K1 is primarily used for coagulation purposes, leaving very little of it for the body to use elsewhere (around 10%-20% of the vitamin). So, although both forms of Vitamin K reach the liver, the structural difference between K1 and K2 enables K2 to bind with fat particles in circulation and reach the arteries, bones, and soft tissue. This affects the degree of bioavailability between the two vitamin K forms profoundly.

The two most commonly used forms of Vitamin K2 are MK-4 and MK-7. Between these two, the latter is found to have 6x the activity of MK-4 in the blood. Simultaneously, MK-7 remains in the blood around 9x as long as its MK-4 counterpart (8 hours vs. 72 hours), which makes it the best K2 form for optimal health.

Vitamin K Health Benefits

Besides its contribution to bone health, Vitamin K2 plays a vital role in supporting blood sugar balance (when already within normal levels), healthy blood-sugar metabolism, and the cardiovascular system. Studies have found that individuals that consumed high K2 amounts have considerably better heart health markers compared to their counterparts that were given vitamin K1.

That aside, Vitamin K plays a pivotal role in balancing the immune system and promoting immunity. One of the longest-standing generational health studies has evidenced that higher vitamin D and vitamin K serum levels are related to a balanced inflammatory response and a stronger immune function. At the same time, Vitamin K can suppress various immune system markers.

Why Vitamin K Supplementation Is Critical

An overwhelming 70% of the western population is vitamin K2 deficient. This is because they do not consume enough Vitamin K to meet their bodies’ needs for bone and cardiovascular health. In fact, the Vitamin K they consume from foods is just enough to maintain sufficient blood clotting.

Add to that various other factors that affect the absorption of Vitamin K, such as compromised intestinal absorption and specific medications (i.e., laxatives, cholesterol-lowering, and antibiotics), it comes as no surprise that most people have insufficient K2 levels. This means that calcium cannot be exported out of the bones and reach other organs and tissues, where it is also needed.
