This form of carnitine is more easily absorbed and utilized than regular carnitine, especially in the elderly. Acetyl-L-Carnitine occurs naturally in the body as the most bioactive derivative of the amino acid L-Carnitine. The aging process reduces the normal intestinal absorption and uptake of L-Carnitine, but not of Acetyl-L-Carnitine. Acetyl-L-Carnitine plays a central role in mitochondrial energy metabolism and has a wide variety of applications in supporting normal healthy functioning.
