About Wen Dan Tang
Wen Dan Tang is a product formulated to help bring harmony between the stomach and the gallbladder and treat phlegm heat. It is a popular formula that is widely used to combat palpitation, insomnia, vertigo, nausea, anxiety, and vomiting caused by phlegm heat. Despite the fact that “Wen” means “warming”, the compounds in the product specifically target to clear phlegm heat.
How Wen Dan Tang Works
In traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Qi energy can flow smoothly if there is harmony between the stomach and gallbladder, which allows them to function properly. In any other case, blocked Qi flow could transform it into phlegm and generate heat and cause restlessness and a stifling sensation in the chest, among many others. Note that “phlegm” in TCM is not the same as our common term. When that happens, the individual experiences phlegm-heat symptoms, which manifest as digestive discomforts (i.e., nausea) or mental stress. This is because the gallbladder is considered the source of courage in Traditional Chinese Medicine. When there is dysfunction there, we may experience restlessness, uneasiness, fear, fright, and dreaminess. All that causes Qi to flow rebelliously in the stomach, causing vomiting, nausea, and other health conditions.
Due to its ingredients, Wen Dan Tang helps clear heat and phlegm from the stomach and gallbladder and reverse the rebellious flow of Qi, among many others.
Wen Dan Tang Ingredients
The primary compounds in the formula are:
Chen Pi (Per. Citri Reticulatae) – It descends Qi, transforms phlegm, tonifies the spleen, and regulates Qi. Combined with Sheng Jiang, it fights vomiting and nausea caused by rebellious Qi., as well as other manifestations of cold-dampness and stomach Qi disharmony. Blended with Ban Xia, it helps battle phlegm-damp obstruction symptoms, such as excessive viscous sputum.
Zhu Ru (Caulis bambusae in taeniis) - It is the most essential substance in the Materia Medica for clearing phlegm and heat from the stomach and gallbladder. It can help regulate Qi flow and also combats phlegm heat-related irritability, palpitations, emotional problems, and insomnia.

Ban Xia (Rhizoma pinelliae ternatae) – Along with Chen Pi (pericarpium citri reticulatae), it helps expel phlegm and dry dampness while also harmonizing Qi circulation in the middle burner.
Fu Ling (Sclerotium poriae cocos) – Combined with another compound, Gan Cao, which also harmonizes all other ingredients, it calms the spirit, leaches out dampness, and strengthens the spleen. It helps transform phlegm and harmonize the Middle Jiao while also treating vomiting, anorexia, distention, chest fullness, and nausea due to congested fluids.
Gan Cao (radix glycyrrhizae uralensis) – It moderates the harsh attributes of the other herbs in the formula and harmonizes all other compounds. How it All Started with Wen Dan Tang
Also referred to as Warm the Gallbladder Decoction, Wen Dan Tang is an ancient formula whose origins go back to the 7th century. A man titles China’s King of Medicine, namely Sun Simiao, was the first to use the formula to help treat moodiness and insomnia – symptoms that were frequently making their presence after a serious illness. Sun Simiao firmly believed that the symptoms mentioned before were caused by cold in the gallbladder. This is how the formula ended up being regarded as a gallbladder decoction that warmed the gallbladder up. Nevertheless, the version used today is used to clear phlegm heat rather than warm it up. So, although the original name is still being used to date, the formula is widely used for its cooling properties.
Notes:
- Always consult your healthcare practitioner before using any dietary or nutritional supplements or herbs, especially if you are on medication, pregnant, or nursing.
