Description
The Spleen is responsible for the transportation and transformation of food, fluids and nutrients in the body and is the central pivot of Qi transformation, the root of the body's metabolic function. It separates the clear Yang which rises up to nourish the body from the turbid Yin, which descends as waste to the Lower Burner. The clear Yang transforms the food and drink into an abundance of Qi which moves upwards and outwards towards the extremities, nourishing the skin, Yin, viscera and Blood. Shen Ling Spleen Support focuses on the pattern of Spleen Qi vacuity which leads to internally generated Dampness. When the Qi of the Spleen is weakened by poor eating habits, mental exertion or excessive worry, Dampness accumulates in the Middle Burner. This prescription is quite valuable for the patient who overconsumes sweet, sticky and cold foods and who feels chronically tired, weak and heavy, sometimes with shortness of breath, loose stools, abdominal distension and a poor appetite. This prescription is also appropriate for treating a Spleen/Lung disharmony in which there is copious, clear, white sputum with a productive cough. According to the five-phase theory, by supplementing Earth, the mother phase, we benefit Metal, the child phase. Shen Ling Spleen Support supplements the Spleen and Stomach, improves the Qi transformation, clears accumulated Dampness from the Middle Burner and fortifies the Lungs. This prescription can strengthen the Spleen and transform Dampness without damaging the Yin.
