About Xiao Yan San

Xiao Yan San comes from a thousand-year-old natural remedy. The formula is now used as a dietary supplement for stress management, depression, and other manifestations of liver qi stagnation.

Studies have proven that the traditional Chinese medicine formula can regulate the secretion of hormones that are stimulated or inhibited by the hypothalamus-pituitary function, as well as help treat gynecological diseases. The formula also contributes to a harmonious stomach function, calms down the liver, and increases the energy of the spleen. In addition, Xiao Yan San supports a healthy hippocampal neuron function (the hippocampal neurons are viral components of the functioning of the human brain) in people with chronic stress.

Xiao Yao San means “Free & Easy Wanderer” and the primary idea behind its development was to help bring the body and mind back into balance, allowing you to deal with difficulties or problems calmly, without letting them negatively affect your health.

Decoding Liver Qi Stagnation

A healthy liver has balanced energy that has been achieved by proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. Imbalances in the liver energy can worsen symptoms like vertigo, hay fever, headaches, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). They also reduce one’s energy levels and can make you have sudden bursts and feeling a bit more short-tempered than usual. One of the things that affect almost all organs within the body, including the liver, is stress, which in western medicine causes the liver qi to “get stuck”. If the depression, sadness, and other blocked emotions are not dealt with or expressed appropriately, the liver qi stagnates further, which, in turns, leads to other symptoms.

Some of the manifestations of an imbalanced liver qi are:

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Lassitude
  • Tidal fever
  • Hypochondriac pain
  • Eye and/or mouth dryness
  • Headaches
  • Night sweating (or spontaneous sweating)
  • Reduced appetite
  • Difficult & painful urination
  • Abdominal pain
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Endometriosis
  • Palpitation
  • Flushing-up
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Leukoderma
  • Infertility
  • Chronic fatigue

Xiao Yao San Formula Ingredients

Chai Hu (Bupleurum) - Traditionally used to release constraint in the flanks and chest; hence, free up the liver channel and promote energy flow. When the liver qi is stagnant, people usually feel chest oppression, flank pain, and shallow breathing due to diaphragm tension.

Bai Shao (White Peony) - A plant whose roots are used to fight coughing, tract illnesses, osteoarthritis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), PMS, upset stomach, atherosclerosis, viral hepatitis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue, and nerve pain, among others. It is also much appreciated for its antioxidant properties.

Dang Gui (Angelica Root) – Its estrogen-like properties help treat pre-menstrual and menopausal symptoms, as well as regulate female hormones and nourish the uterus. It also relieves constipation, aids in the regulation of menstrual flow, improves prostate gland health, increases energy levels, improves mood, boosts immune functioning, maintains proper metabolism, and controls inflammation.

Bo He (Herbal Mente) – An ingredient that is particularly effective in relieving headaches and opening the throat; thus, increasing energy levels.

Fu Ling (Poria) – A sweet herb that was commonly used to strengthen/support the spleen, drain dampness, and release constraint in the chest and below the heart. It helps balance the digestive system and promotes mental calmness.

Bai Zhu (Atractylodes) – A herb that fosters urination, tonifies the spleen qi, fights sweating/fatigue/constipation/poor appetite/low energy levels, dries dampness, and combats issues deriving from the spleen’s inability to transform and transport food (i.e., water retention, dizziness, cough, and edema).

Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-Fried Licorice) – In Chinese herbal formulas, this herb is used as a harmonizer that enhances the overall effect of the Xiao Yao San formula. It tonifies the spleen, fights cough, alleviates pain, stops spasms, regulates temperature, and relieve ulcers and lesions. Western clinical medicine uses the herb primarily for its antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and antacid effects.

Pao Jiang (Brown Ginger) – Quick-fried ginger is used to treat dysmenorrhea and is particularly favored for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-carcinogenic properties.

Always consult your healthcare provider before taking any dietary supplements.
